Rock and roll had made a sudden arrival in 1955, with Rock Around The Clock topping the charts towards the end of the year. It returned to the chart summit in January 1956, paving the way for a new musical style that proved immensely popular worldwide.
The other notable chart topper of 1956 was undoubtedly Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers Why Do Fools Fall In Love, another track that is usually considered as one of the mainstays of rock and roll. Elsewhere on the charts a number of artists maintained their popularity over many years, even decades, including Dean Martin and Doris Day. Already the British charts were becoming noted for the sheer diversity of repertoire that would ultimately top the charts, a trait that thankfully continues through to today. |
